Michael and the Game He Loved

Basketball was more than a sport to Michael—it was a place where his character showed itself most clearly.

Growing up with an older brother made him competitive from the start. He learned early how to fight for position, how to push himself harder, how to never back down from a challenge. He played to win, and he played with intensity. But what set Michael apart wasn’t just his drive—it was his heart.

On the court, Michael understood something many players never quite learn: the game is bigger than any one person. After an aggressive play from the other team, he was the first to reach down and help an opponent back up. Competition never erased his respect. Winning never mattered more than sportsmanship.

Michael noticed the small things. He saw the teammate who hadn’t scored yet, the one hanging back, waiting for a chance. And when he could, Michael tried to make that moment happen—passing the ball, setting the screen, creating the opportunity. He wanted everyone to feel included, to feel the joy of contributing. He knew how powerful that feeling was.

Basketball taught Michael discipline, teamwork, and resilience—but in truth, he brought those qualities with him onto the court. The game simply gave him a place to express who he already was: a fierce competitor, a loyal teammate, and a genuinely good person.

Today, when people remember Michael through basketball, they don’t just remember points or wins. They remember how he played—with effort, fairness, and kindness. And that legacy matters far more than any score ever could.

Michael loved basketball. And basketball, in return, helped show the world who Michael truly was.
